Your jewellery cleaning and care is easier than you think. Follow our simple jewellery care guide and keep your precious treasures in perfect condition for a lifetime and longer.
General Jewellery Care Guide
- Store Your jewellery correctly: The number 1 rule is to always store your jewellery pieces away from sunlight to avoid causing discolouration,
- Avoid temperature extremes: Avoid exposing your jewellery to temperature extremes such as leaving it on or too near radiators, storing in a freezing cold area, or in a high humidity or damp area. Doing so will cause tarnish or discolouration,
- Keep your jewellery dry: We strongly advise that you never wear your jewellery in the bath, show, while swimming or exercising. Exposing it to excess moisture can damage pearls and some gemstones and can corrode precious metals,
- Avoid cosmetics and creams: Be careful not to allow your jewellery to be excessively exposed to creams, lotions, perfumes, some cosmetics, sprays, soap and hand sanitiser as they can cause damage and discolouration. We advise that you put on your make up, lotions, perfume, sprays etc. before putting on your jewellery.
Cleaning Sterling Silver Jewellery
Nothing looks more beautiful than gleaming sterling silver jewellery. Our silver jewellery cleaning guide will help you keep your precious silver jewellery in perfect condition.
Because pure silver is too soft for jewelry making, it is usually combined with other harder metals to make it more durable for wearing. .925 silver means that your silver jewellery is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% another metal, usually copper or zinc, and is known as sterling silver.
We only use 925 sterling silver for our jewellery designs due to its gleaming bright and shiny finish. However, the copper or zinc metal content means that sterling silver is prone to tarnish (oxidation) over time, meaning that your silver will darken naturally due to its contact with oxygen and the moisture in the air.
The best and easiest way to remove tarnish from your silver pieces is to clean them regularly with a silver polishing cloth. Silver cleaning cloths are designed to gently and effectively remove tarnish without damaging your jewellery. Regular cleaning helps keep your jewellery free from tarnish and general grime and dirt.
Cleaning Silver Earrings
Your silver earrings need to be handled with care when you are cleaning them. Take extra special care when cleaning around the earring posts and backs, as these areas can be easily damaged or bent. You can clean your earring with a soft lint free non abrasive cotton cloth and a little warm water and hand soap. Ensure that you pat them thoroughly dry afterwards with a dry soft cotton non abrasive cloth. Allow to fully air dry before putting them away or wearing them.
Never immerse your earrings in water, especially if they contain pearls. All pearls easily absorb water and can be easily damaged if immersed in water. Many of the softer gemstones such as turquoise can also be easily damaged by immersion in water.
Cleaning Pearl Jewellery
The best and most effective way to clean any type of pearl jewellery is to gently remove grime or dirt with a very slightly damp cloth. No other cleaning is necessary.
